By Glen · January 8, 2005

A novel based on Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell has snuck its way on to the prestigious New York Times Best Seller List. The novel is the first in a series of paperback adventures for Splinter Cell hero Sam Fisher.

Tom Clancy, the author of numerous best selling military fiction novels, is not the author of Splinter Cell, although many people who purchase the novel believe he is. In fact, many have speculated that Clancy was not involved in the creation of the Sam Fisher character or the Splinter Cell franchise but has agreed to "lend" his name to the franchise.

David Michaels is credited as the author of Splinter Cell. In fact, David Michaels is a pseudonym created by the publisher. Raymond Benson is the real author of the Splinter Cell novel. Benson gained prominence in the 1990’s as the author of several James Bond novels. Currently, Benson is working on the second Splinter Cell novel.

The novel series is just the latest sign of activity for the Splinter Cell franchise. The first two games published by Ubisoft - Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell and Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow - have sold 9.7 million copies to date. The highly anticipated third opus, Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell Chaos Theory, will be available this March Xbox

Recent rumbling out of Hollywood indicate that a Splinter Cell feature film is on the way. Many movie websites have reported that Thomas Jane will portray Sam Fisher in the film. Jane is the star of the recent film based on Marvel Comic’s The Punisher.
